Why Chatlator exists
The texts became the lesson
Andrew Bunyan spent years trying to learn Spanish. The apps he tried felt like homework, taught words he'd never use, and needed time he didn't have. Michael Boggia was learning Italian to stay connected to his heritage, and had begrudgingly worked his way through all the mainstream language apps.
What they were already doing was texting each other. So Andrew asked a simple question: what if those texts were the lesson? He built Chatlator to find out.
Each of them writes as normal. Andrew sees every message in his own language and in Spanish, and Michael sees the same conversation in his own language and in Italian. They don't need to be learning the same language, and neither of them has to stop and study.
That is still the whole idea. Chatlator is for the people you already message: a partner who grew up speaking another language, family abroad, a friend learning alongside you. Move one conversation over and the language you're learning turns up in the chats you're already having, with Chati, our AI language coach, on hand with hints, quizzes and practice based on what you actually talk about.
